About A Dickens Holiday

A love letter to downtown Fayetteville.
For one special day each year, Downtown Fayetteville slows down a little, dresses up for Christmas, and welcomes everyone home.
And by home, we don't necessarily mean where you were born or even where you live.
Fayetteville is a community of arrivals, departures and homecomings. Military families come and go. Loved ones leave for deployments and return home again. Students arrive to begin new chapters. Travelers make Fayetteville a stop along the way. Some families have called this place home for generations; others may be walking our downtown streets for the very first time.
A Dickens Holiday is for all of them.

It began as a cheerful alternative to the rush of Black Friday—an invitation to spend the Friday after Thanksgiving strolling downtown, visiting local shops, sharing time with family and friends, and beginning the Christmas season together.
For one day, the streets take on the spirit of a Victorian Christmas village. Music drifts through downtown. Dickens characters mingle with visitors. Horse-drawn carriages pass historic storefronts. Artisans and food vendors fill the marketplace, and locally owned shops open their doors.

The Spirit of A Christmas Carol
At the heart of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a simple idea: it is never too late to open our hearts to one another.
Scrooge's story is one of transformation. He is reminded of what he has forgotten—friendship, generosity, compassion, laughter and the importance of belonging to a community. He wakes on Christmas morning understanding that a meaningful life is one shared with others.
That spirit is at the heart of A Dickens Holiday, too.
We gather downtown not simply to recreate a Victorian Christmas, but to practice some of its best lessons: welcome the stranger, remember our neighbors, support one another, give generously, share what we have, and make room for one another.
And then evening comes.

Candles begin to glow. Families, friends, neighbors and strangers gather together in the streets. Thousands of individual lights become something much greater when they shine together.
Whether you've been here for generations, just arrived, are waiting for someone to come home, or are simply passing through—
There is a place for you here.
Why Downtown
Downtown is the common ground of a community that is always changing.
A Dickens Holiday brings us together in the heart of Fayetteville—to walk, shop, eat, discover, laugh, remember and make new traditions.
Supporting a local shop, talking with a maker, welcoming a newcomer, watching a child meet a Dickens character, sharing a meal or simply standing beside someone you don't know as the candles are lit—these small moments become part of the story.
Come Home to Dickens
People arrive. People leave. People return. And every year, new families experience A Dickens Holiday for the first time.
But the heart of the tradition remains the same: community, generosity, welcome and the simple pleasure of being together.
A Dickens Holiday is free and open to everyone.
Wherever you're from. Wherever you're going. Come downtown and stay awhile. You're welcome here.
